Canada Wants to Include Masculinity in Their Definition Of Terrorism

Updated: Apr 30, 2018

Workers clean up the sidewalk after a madman went on a rampage with a truck killing 10 people.

In Canada a madman recently went on a rampage with a truck driving it down the sidewalk killing 10 people and injuring 14. Suspect 25 yr old Alek Minassian was charged today in a court in Toronto. It is not known yet what his motives were for this heinous crime but we do have a clue.

Commentators on Canada's CTV discussed changing the definition of terrorism to include toxic masculinity.

It has now come to light that Mr. Minassian made this comment. So Canada's CTV invited Canadian lawmakers onto their show to discuss the possibility of changing the definition of terrorism to include masculinity and the Alt Right. All of this is based on the comment about INCEL and some troubling comments about women on social media.

Former classmates at Thornlea Secondary School in Thornhill, a Toronto suburb, said Mr. Minassian had displayed extreme social awkwardness. But they said he had seemed harmless, had shown no propensity for violence, and that news that he was the attacker had shocked their close-knit high school community.

There are also reports that Mr. Minassian may have been bullied while he was in school, because of his social awkwardness and his Chronic Motor and Vocal Tic Disorder which may be Tourettes Syndrome. Chronic Tic Disorders are said to affect somewhere between 5 and 25% of people and are not the fault of individuals suffering from them.

“He was an odd guy, and hardly mixed with other students,” said Ari Blaff, a former high school classmate who is now a graduate student in international relations at the University of Toronto. “He had several tics and would sometimes grab the top of his shirt and spit on it, meow in the hallways and say, ‘I am afraid of girls.’ It was like a mantra.”

"Mr. Minassian did not express strong ideological views or harass women, but he was isolated and others privately made fun of him. He was a loner and had few friends,” Mr. Blaff said.

Josh Kirstein, who took a photography class with Mr. Minassian in high school and works in the mental health field, said Mr. Minassian had difficulty communicating and expressed fear that women could hurt him. Other classmates said he literally ran away when women approached, even female students determined to befriend him.

CTV discussing how they want to make masculinity and the Alt right part of Canada's definition of terrorism.

So I'd like to make three observations about this event.

First I don't see how the actions of this obviously troubled individual have any reflection on men, masculinity, or the alt right as CTV seemed so want to go on and on about. While what happened was terrible, everything that I have read about Mr. Minassian describes an individual who sounds mentally ill. I mean, one of his old class mates talked about him making weird noises in the hall way, spitting on his shirt, and running away from women when they would approach him. That is not a description of a masculine person at all. Rather that is a description of a person suffering from Tourette's Sydrome possibly, who was ostracized, and bullied as a child because of his differences. He was afraid of women, he was not some macho overly masculine neanderthal as the CTV news casters described him to be.

Second the idea of outlawing masculinity and conservatism should scare the hell out of Canadians. Think about the implications of what that could mean. Every time that a feminist extremist gets angry at a man he could be charged as a terrorist. The possibility that a man could get locked up and charged as a terrorist just because he is being to masculine sounds very frightening. Equally frightening is the idea that they want to put conservatism on that list as well. The future for citizens of Canada could become very frightening indeed.

Third I would like to point out that Canada has effectively outlawed personal ownership of firearms for many years, but it hasn't prevented crazy people from performing mass killings. As pro second amendment people often point out, if someone wants to go on a killing spree they will find a way. In this case the killer used a large van.

So maybe instead of looking at reasons that don't make much sense we should take a look at better ways to prevent this sort of thing from happening again. I mentioned that it sounds like this young man suffered from Tourettes. I am not a medical expert but based on the symptoms described that is my best guess. What kind of help did the school system offer to him when he was a student? Did they try to do anything about the bullying that may have driven him to take this extreme action? What about his social media comments. People knew that he was saying troubling things about women, but did nothing to stop him. Again and again in these events we find out later that police were aware of the threat that these people presented before they snapped but did nothing to stop them. Could treating his mental health have prevented this? All of these are questions that I believe are worth looking into.
