Political correctness is the worse kind of discrimination and bigotry. When a white supremacist, a homosexual hater, or a religious bigot, etc. does it, it isn't as bad. They are honest about how they feel, there aren't very many of them, and they have no power. You can grit your teeth and ignore those people or flip them off and go on about your day knowing that they are complete A-holes. But a PC hero patronizing their charity case with kid gloves is not treating them like an equal. They are just cloaking themselves in PC self-righteousness. There are a lot of these people and many of them are very rich and powerful. Their behavior is condescending, it pisses people off, and it perpetuates the problem. Just treat people like equals. That is all that is required.
