One of my favorite Thanksgiving dishes is candied yams. Here is my simple recipe for this tasty holiday dish.
Ingredients:
3 or 4 large sweet potatoes
1/4 stick of butter
(variable quantity) Cinnamon
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 cups of miniature marshmallows (optional)
1/2 cup pecans (optional)
1. Peel the sweet potatoes and cube them. I like to make them about one inch cubes.
2. Steam or boil the sweet potatoes until tender. Drain liquid if any. (I prefer to steam them I like the texture better in the finished dish.)
3. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
4. Spread the sweet potatoes evenly in a medium casserole dish.
5. Slice the butter into pieces and spread it out evenly on top of the potatoes.
6. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly on top of the potatoes.
7. Sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon evenly on top of the potatoes.
8. Add optional pecans if you want them. I used to add pecans but then we had a new addition to the family with nut allergies so now I leave that out.
9. Add optional marshmallows if you want to. I find most people love them with the marshmallows but not everyone does.
10. Bake for 25 minutes in preheated oven until the marshmallows have melted.
(optional) Aluminum foil can be added to help the food cook more evenly and clean up easier.
