The Mind of a Mass Killer: Mental Illness, Gangs, Bullying, Terrorism and Medications

Updated: May 1, 2018

A collage of mass killers from 2013. As you can see mass killers can be from any race or sex, which does not fit the popular liberal dialog that all mass killers are white male alt right extremists.

According to USA Today from 2007 to 2017 there were over 350 mass killings in America. A mass killing is defined as a homicide where 4 or more people were killed in a single event. High profile public massacres like the deadly Parkland High School shooting only account for about 1 in 6 mass killings with the vast majority of them beginning with some kind of domestic conflict.

While we are overwhelmed by media when a high profile event is also a mass shooting the vast majority of these events go unreported because they do not fit the gun grabbing agenda of liberals.

In fact do a little research on Google under the words mass killing and you will almost invariably find information exclusively about mass shootings even though firearms are only one of many methods used to perpetrate a mass killing. Over the years many devices have been used to orchestrate these horrid crimes, airplanes, vehicles, bombs, knives, and chemicals just to name a few, but the liberal agenda is to paint a picture that only guns are used in these crimes.

There are in fact three myths that liberal media try to spin every time that a mass shooting happens. One is that all mass shooting are committed by guns, or more specifically by assault rifles.

An example chart that I found while searching for information about "mass killings".

The second myth that Liberals try to push is that mass killings are a unique American problem. It is not. In fact Canada just recently had a mass killing involving a large truck which was driven down a busy sidewalk killing 10 people and injuring many others. In fact mass killings are happening all over the world. There was a mass shooting in Paris, France in 2015 for example that took the lives of 128 people and injured over 400 people. What makes this crime so significant is the fact that guns are banned in France. At the time even the police were not allowed to carry them, because of this it took over an hour for police to be able to respond to what was happening.

The faces of mass killers. What motivates them to do the things they do?

The third myth that is often pushed by liberal media is that all mass killers are white male members of the alt right. That is why when a white person commits a mass shooting you hear a great deal about it on the news, but when a person of a different race commits a mass killing you will often hear very little about it. That is also why they have made the word terrorism a dirty word in the politically correct lexicon. They don't want the public to start thinking that people from other races might be responsible for some of the mass killings that happen.

The first step to solving any problem is to admit what the problem really is. Liberals want to call it a gun problem, an American problem, and a white alt right problem. It isn't any of those things. One of the reasons that I am making a point of talking about mass killings instead of mass shootings is because in many of theses cases no firearms are used. All sorts of things can become weapons, vehicles, bombs, poisons, and blades just to name a few. Here in the United States firearms are used in the largest percentage of mass killings, but that isn't the case in other countries. What that proves is mass killers use whatever weapon is convenient at the time. For the guy in Canada recently that meant a truck was what he used. In China a man killed 22 people using knives, In Britain knife, axe, and vehicular mass killings are becoming more common. In Japan someone tried to use Saran gas (poison gas) in a subway tunnel. In Syria someone used chemical weapons on civilians.

What we have is a violence problem. Taking away the guns just changes the weapon of convenience it doesn't stop the violence. Regardless of the weapon of choice violence is still violence. No matter how a person is killed they are dead. For some reason liberals want to act like one kind of violence is worse than all of the other kinds of violence and that one kind of dead is too. That is just nonsensical thinking. We need to look at why people become violent in the first place.

If we are going to start having any chance of finding real solutions for stopping violence then we need to start looking at what is causing the violence in the first place. What do all or at least some of these killers have in common. One area that Liberals refuse to have an honest conversation about is terrorism. They want to pretend like it isn't really happening all over the world as if ignoring it will somehow make it go away. Ignoring a problem will never make it go away, and in this case can get a lot of people killed.

Known Islamic terrorist training facilities across America

Of course when I mention terrorism many will automatically think of Islamic terrorism, but Islam is not the only violent group out there. They are just one example of political extremists that have turned violent in the past. There are also animal rights extremists, environmental extremists, racial supremacist from virtually every race, and religious extremists from lots of religions.

Another area that liberals want to ignore is gang violence. Gangs are responsible for a great deal of drugs, crime, and violence where ever they are allowed to go unchecked. One of the worse gangs in America, MS13, is also part of the growing illegal immigration problem. MS13 is an international crime gang out of Central America. Many of its original member were guerrilla fighters during the civil war in El Salvador who turned their military training into a criminal empire.

Gang members from the Crips.

With the popularity of social media it often comes to light that mass killers became members of extremist groups or gangs before committing their crime. They often get on social media and discuss what they want to do before they do it. Often what we are learning after the fact is that these people are already being monitored or investigated by police, FBI, Homeland Security, DEA, etc. In some of our most recent mass killings, the killers even announced their plans, police knew about it, people from the public called them and warned them, but they didn't do anything to stop what the crime from happening.

Image from surveillance camera showing the sheriff standing outside Parkland High School during the recent shooting in FL. instead of doing something to stop the shooter.

There have been several high profile mass killers that are known to have been mentally ill before they committed their crime. Also a large number of mass shooters are prescribed medications to deal with depression, anxiety, and even anti-psychotics. I know there is a danger that comes from focusing on mental illness as a cause of mass killings. It could cause a stigma against the mentally ill that I don't want to see happen. The vast majority of people with mental problems are harmless, but when a psychiatrist knows someone has psychotic tendencies and is prescribing medication for it, why aren't we doing a better job of monitoring that.

In a number of recent cases it has been noted that the killers where bullied when they were in school. Does bullying have any connection to what motivates a killer to become a killer? Well according to healthline.com referenced in the article below it could. People who have a predisposition to become psychotic, some think it may be genetic, can have their disease triggered in a number of ways including drug use, lack of sleep, and other environmental factors. In addition, certain situations can lead to specific types of psychosis developing.

So are these commonalities

They also have a great article about the lasting effects of both bullies and bullying on children which include, anxiety, depression, suicidal tendencies, and other psychiatric disorders. In a study done by JAMA Psychiatry in found that kids who were bullied a lot are 20% more likely to need psychiatric treatment as an adult. Kids who were bullies were 23% more likely to need treatment as an adult, and kids who were in both categories bullies who were themselves bullied were 31% more likely to need treatment.

The study showed that bullying by peers had worse psychological effect than abuse by adults. Bullying, in contrast, is repeated aggression by peers — such as verbal taunts, physical attacks, or social exclusion — carried out at least once a week.

Wolke’s research team followed two groups of children, one British and one American, into adulthood. The data on maltreatment and bullying in youth correlated to mental health problems in adulthood.

“The strength of our study is that we found similar findings on the effects of bullying on adult mental health in both cohorts, despite their differences in population,” Wolke said.

One in 3 U.S. children reports that they’ve been bullied at school, and about 1 in 7 reports online bullying.

“Being bullied is not a harmless rite of passage or an inevitable part of growing up; it has serious long-term consequences,” said Wolke, acknowledging that it is pervasive across cultures and socioeconomic groups.

My point is this; we need to start taking an honest look at what causes someone to become a killer. I realize that in many cases that this is very elusive. Not every person is the same, but if we start taking an honest approach to what causes a person to become psychotic then maybe we can prevent a person from snapping before they lose it and kill a bunch of people.

We need to recognize the signs that someone has violent tendencies. It isn't good enough to watch someone join ISIL, or monitor threats of violence from some computer at FBI headquarters. We have to be willing and able to take active steps to stop someone from doing something like this.

Finally we need to do a better job of protecting vulnerable targets. Slapping a GFZ sign on a building does nothing to stop a crazy person from walking in and shooting up the place. Violence is a part of our culture. We need to recognize that and take steps to protect our most vulnerable people from it. Maybe that means better security measures, or maybe that means armed guards. Maybe it can be as simple as making sure doors are locked. (The Parkland shooter entered the building through an unlocked back door.)
