One of the beauties of writing commentary sometimes I get to make predictions. With all the mistreatment of women that is being brought to light there is another well known secret of politicians, celebrities, and wealthy people of power that they don't want us to talk about. There is another topic where they stand all high and mighty looking down their judgemental noses at the rest of us. The whole while they are being hypocrites. They are some of the worse drug and alcohol abusers in the country. Furthermore, many instances where women are being abused by people of power, substances are also being abused. Ever since Senator Ted Kennedy drove his car off a bridge while driving drunk and left poor Mary Jo Kopechne to drown this has been evident, but ignored or worse covered up.
Senator Kennedy wasn't the only fat cat in Washington boozing it up while trying to find his next victim to sexually harass. There are plenty of examples of this over the years. Some would say that politicians have always loved their booze.
Alcohol isn't the only substance that our politicians are addicted to. President Nixon is said to have had an alcohol problem and an addiction to barbiturates. It is said that he took Seconal [a barbiturate] as a sleep-aid, and Dilantin, a drug that leveled you out and was later diagnosed to people with bipolar disorder. With a career that ended in the Watergate scandal some wonder if his decisions would not have been better if he had remained sober. The party rages on in the world of the wealthy and the powerful as over the years one scandal after another has come out about drug and alcohol abuse. Often the sex scandals that we are hearing so much about are tied directly to some type of substance abuse, but the lame stream fake news media rarely reports that relevant information to us.
And today we are left wondering why was it a crime when Nixon spied on the Democrat National Committee, but it is considered a big "Nothing burger" when the Obama administration spied on Republican candidate Donald Trump?
Politicians aren't the only ones who have a love affair with alcohol. Despite being arrested for drunk driving and diagnosed with depression Rachel Maddow still likes her booze. She isn't alone either.
Rachel "Mad Cow" Maddow boozing it up on live television. She is an admitted alcoholic who has been charged with a DUI in the past.
There are no end of stories of celebrities with substance addictions, and yet these people want to tell us how to live our lives.
Some have not been lucky enough to survive their addictions to illegal drugs and alcohol.
My point is this. Do we really want people who are drunk, stoned, or high on whatever they may have drank, smoked, snorted, popped, or shot up making our laws? I propose that they need to make mandatory drug testing for anyone that is running for Federal office and that the results be made public. We deserve to know if our lawmakers are using. I also propose that all members of congress be subject to random drug screens.
I predict that like awareness of sexual harassment the public will become more aware of the number of drug and alcohol abusers among lawmakers. As more stories like the tale of Rep. Dan Johnson come out people will begin to think about the part alcohol and drugs play in these scenarios. For those not familiar Rep. Johnson had several accusations of sexual harassment including sexually assaulting a 17 year old girl while he was drunk.
